The year 2011 heralded the 40th Anniversary of the founding of the original Cleethorpes
Ladies Choir which was formed by Vera Burton in 1971.
Brenda Oxborrow took over as Musical Director in 1980.
In 1996 the choir integrated the then Grimsby Ladies choir to form The Grimsby and
Cleethorpes Ladies Choir as it is now known.
The present Musical Director is Rita Grove who took over the musical leadership of
the choir in 2008. Under her guidance she has passed on to the members many singing
techniques to improve their quality of deliverance of the repertoire in concert.
Rita is supported by Sheila Shelston, the choir’s accompanist since 1982.
The present membership is about 42 and the choir sings a large and varied repertoire
ranging from jazz through to the musicals and serious pieces written by composers
such as Rutter all of which are enjoyed by the membership.
The choir has belonged to the National Association of Choirs for many years and is
an active member of the local group, sending representatives each year to the Annual
General Meeting of the NAC.
Our Anniversary year celebrations began in February when we had as our guests the
well-respected Carlton Main and Frickley Colliery Band. Our established tradition
of bringing quality music groups to this area was continued in March, when we hosted
a special concert with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, with their MD Chris Dean.
Our Anniversary year continued with a celebratory dinner for all members and friends.
A weekend visit to Luton was arranged in October as guests of the Luton Male Voice
choir. The year culminated in a Celebratory Christmas Concert in early December with
special guests Colne Valley Male Voice Choir.
In all a very enjoyable and momentous year for the Choir.
